CROATIA BY CAR

Travelling by car has become the best way to truly experience Croatia. With the recently constructed international highway all regions of Croatia have become completely interconnected. Croatia is a country abundant with natural beauty and whether driving along the nation's modern motorways, expressways or rural roads the spectacular vistas will amaze you. Enjoy the ride as you take in the glorious sights of cascading peaks and valleys, pine-forested mountains, kilometers of olive tree orchards and vineyards, and the spectacular Adriatic coastline. There are 11 main motorways (A1 to A11), the major ones connect Zagreb to Pula, Rijeka, Zadar, Split and Varazdin. There are plans to continue the highway to the most southern part of Croatia, Dubrovnik, within the next two years. Tolls are charged for the use of the highway; kunas, euros, and credit cards are accepted. Expressways do not charge tolls.

 

Speed Limits

  • 50 km/h (31 mph) within inhabited areas
  • 90 km/h (56 mph) outside inhabited areas
  • 110 km/h (68 mph) on expressways
  • 130 km/h (81 mph) on freeways

 

Driving Regulations

  • Necessary documents: valid drivers license, automobile registration card, vehicle insurance
  • Safety belts are mandatory
  • The use of mobile phones while driving is prohibited
  • The legal blood alcohol level is 0.05
  • In order to cross the border a green card is needed

 

Petrol Stations
Major petrol stations are open 24 hours. This includes all gas stations in major cities and along the motorways. All other stations are open from 7 to 20:00 and in the summer months are open until 22:00.
