St.Antun Church

Croatia

Churches and Holy Buildings

St.Antun is an idyllic little church dedicated to the patron saint of Korcula, Saint Antun of Padova, situated on the hilltop of Glavica with beautiful views of the Korcula Archipelago in the distance. The church was originally built in the 14th century. During the 17th century Bishop Nikola Spanic added the baroque portal and windows to the second part of the church. 101 steps lead up to the church dotted by cypress trees which were originally planted in 1708. The stone arch at the top of the stairs is embellished with the Spanic family coat of arms. The quaint stone square in front of the church is where services take place weather conditions permitting. Their are a few benches and an ancient water wall which was once used by the hermit monks. Every year on the 13th of June, St.Antun's name day, a mass service and celebrations take place at St.Antun's Church.
