Churches and Holy Buildings

The Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary symbolizes a significant turning point of the history of Vrgorac. Once a Turkish mosque it was converted into a church in 1694 after liberation from the Turks.

The Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary was completely rebuilt after the desturction of the ancient mosque in 1913. The church was made of hewn stone in neo-Romanesque style. This sacral masterpiece has three naves and two church bells dating back to the 18th century. On the main church altar is a stunning Italo-Byzantine Madonna.

The Annunciation of the Virgin Mary was built by architect Ciril Metod Ivekovic. He was a very prominent architect whose work included numerous churches in the Dalmatian region including Zadar, Knin and Benkovac.

Masses are held every Sunday throughout the year by Pastor Ivica Omazic.
