Description

Take a journey through centuries of Zagreb’s history on this engaging 2.5-hour guided walking tour led by a passionate local expert. Start at the elegant Zrinjevac Park and follow your guide toward Ban Jelačić Square, the bustling heart of the city. Here, discover how Zagreb got its name and uncover the legends behind its founding. Continue to the majestic Zagreb Cathedral — one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Learn about the origins of the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, its turbulent history, and the many restorations it has undergone through the centuries. Next, stroll through Dolac Market, known as the 'belly of Zagreb,' where locals gather daily for fresh produce and vibrant street life. Wander down lively Tkalčićeva Street, famous for its buzzing café culture, and hear how the art of lounging is deeply embedded in local life. Don't miss the chance to explore the fascinating WWII-era Grič Tunnel — a hidden underground passage that once served as a wartime shelter and now offers a glimpse into Zagreb’s more recent history. Just a short walk away is the city's beloved funicular, the oldest public transport in Zagreb, offering scenic views over the rooftops. (Note: currently closed for renovation until March 2026.) Ascend to the Upper Town (Gradec), one of Zagreb’s original medieval settlements. Enjoy a peaceful walk along Strossmayer Promenade, a leafy terrace with some of the best panoramic views of the city. See the iconic Lotrščak Tower and postcard-worthy St. Mark’s Church, instantly recognizable by its colorful tiled roof. Follow your guide past the oldest pharmacy in Zagreb, and walk through the historic Stone Gate — the only surviving gate from the city’s old fortifications. Inside, discover a hidden chapel with a painting of Our Lady, said to be miraculous and beloved by locals. Before ending your tour, uncover a few hidden gems tucked away from the main tourist routes. The tour concludes back at Ban Jelačić Square, where your guide will be happy to offer recommendations for food, museums, or your next adventure in Zagreb.
