Between 1992 and 1995 the town was badly damaged during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina and much of urban centre was left in ruins and the Old Bridge destroyed. The Old Bridge was rebuilt in 2004 and many of the edifices in the Old Town have been restored or rebuilt with the contribution of an international scientific committee established by UNESCO.
