Explore one of Croatia's top hiking destinations, the Paklenica National Park, on a full-day guided excursion from Novalja. Hike along spectacular canyons that cut into the southern slopes of Velebit — the only way to really get to know Paklenica — and have the opportunity to visit the dramatic Manita Peć cave. Begin your tour at the meeting point in Novalja and board a bus for the 86-kilometer (53.4-mile) journey to the national park. Upon arrival in this protected area, see the black-pine forests that lend Paklenica its name. The black-pine sap, called paklina, was used by natives in traditional medicine to treat wounds, as well as for illumination and the surface treatment of wooden boats. Depending on your wishes, choose among the various trails offering a range of difficulty levels. Keep your eye out for the park's numerous wildlife species, such as eagles, falcons, deer, and bears. Pay a visit to the Manita Peć cave to marvel at the stalagmites and stalactites, as well as the numerous bat species that call the cave home. Throughout your trip, delight in stunning views of the natural scenery. Basic hiking experience is required and children over the age of 8 may participate if accompanied by a parent or guardian.
