Description

Immerse yourself in the rich and fascinating history of Cavtat. and visit its most significant sites and hidden gems. At the meeting point, you will discover details about the Franciscan Monastery and its church, as well as learn about the life and work of Frano Supilo, a prominent Croatian politician and a tragic historical figure from the early 20th century. During the walk along the beautiful seaside promenade around the Rat peninsula, you will find out why there are very few remains of the once significant Roman colony of Epidaurus in today's Cavtat, and you will hear an interesting story about the 'Russian House,' which used to be a gathering place for renowned artists. On the way to the Cemetery of St. Rocco, your guide will introduce you to the life and work of Ivan Meštrović, the greatest Croatian sculptor and the architect of the Račić Mausoleum. He will also share with you the tragic circumstances that led to the sudden death of the distinguished family resting within it. In the courtyard of the birthplace of the painter Vlaho Bukovac, you will learn the most exciting details about his childhood and discover why he is considered the most significant Croatian painter by many. The monument on the eastern side of Cavtat's waterfront is dedicated to Baltazar Bogišić, a scholar and collector who left his entire estate to his hometown. In the immediate vicinity, you will also find the house of Tino Pattiera, an opera singer who was the main star of renowned opera houses in the first half of the 20th century. At Villa Banac, you will learn the story of its wealthy owner and the visit of an English Duke and his wife, who arrived here for a vacation by seaplane. The walk conveniently concludes on the northern side of Hotel Croatia, where you will discover the remains of a 2000-year-old ancient villa with a breathtaking view of Cavtat.
